Duty Station: Khorog, Tajikistan Commencement Date: 1 August 2025 Background The University of Central Asia (UCA) was founded in 2000 as a private, not for profit, secular university through an International Treaty signed by the Presidents of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, and His Highness the Aga Khan; ratified by their respective parliaments, and registered with the United Nations. The Presidents are the Patrons of the University and His Highness is the Chancellor. UCA’s mission is to promote the social and economic development of Central Asia, particularly its mountain communities, by offering an internationally recognised standard of higher education, and enabling the peoples of the region to preserve their rich cultural heritage as assets for the future. Position Overview UCA invites applications for a faculty position in Economics at all academic ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor). The appointment rank will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and scholarly achievements. We seek scholars from all fields of economics, though we have particular interest in candidates specializing in Macroeconomics, International Economics, Environmental/Natural Resources Economics, Development Economics, or Finance. Our ideal candidate will bring fresh perspectives to these areas while maintaining a keen interest in Central Asian economic development. Key Responsibilities As a faculty member at UCA, you will have the unique opportunity to blend teaching excellence with impactful research in a dynamic setting. In the classroom, you will guide undergraduate students through four courses per year, fostering an intimate learning environment that characterizes our liberal arts approach. Your role extends beyond traditional instruction to developing innovative curricula and providing personalized mentorship that helps students master economic concepts. The position also offers exciting possibilities for research and community engagement. We expect you to establish a vibrant research program, ideally focusing on Central Asian economic development and its mountainous regions. You'll have the freedom to pursue your research interests while creating opportunities for student involvement. Additionally, you'll contribute to institutional growth through service activities and community outreach, helping build bridges between research and regional economic development. Minimum Qualifications PhD in Economics or closely related field from an internationally recognized university. Strong record of applied economic research Undergraduate teaching experience Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion Preferred Qualifications Teaching/research experience in Central Asia Demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, i.e. developing new and interesting courses grounded in a discipline area and interdisciplinary in nature Experience using innovative teaching methods and evaluation methodologies Language The language of instruction at UCA is English. Advanced Academic English is required, and knowledge of Central Asian languages (e.g. Tajik, Kyrgyz, Kazakh) and/or Russian would be an asset Timing and Location The duty station for the position is Khorog, Tajikistan, a small town nestled in the picturesque Pamir mountains.
